When we feel good at school

During the summer holidays, I travelled to the Greek island of Rhodes as part of the Erasmus+ programme, where I spent a week attending the training course How to Become a Well-Being Ambassador and Create Happy Classrooms and Schools. The course focused on student wellbeing, mental health, and creating a safe and supportive school environment. It introduced me to a wide range of practical methods that I can see myself using in my everyday teaching practice.

A significant part of the course was devoted to school mediation and conflict resolution. Through role-play scenarios, we practised active listening, empathetic communication, and asking open-ended questions. Most importantly, we learned how to look for solutions that both sides of a conflict can accept, rather than solutions that benefit only one of them.

What does wellbeing actually mean? It is not a collection of individual activities or one special day at school. It is the atmosphere that students experience in every lesson: the quality of relationships, a sense of safety, trust, and the feeling that they belong at school.
